Pressfit Technology

Due to the increased application of SMD components, and the wide use of multilayer PCB's, the demand for interconnection devices utilizing pressfit technology has increased. The installation of pressfit connectors is done after the PCB has been populated with all other components. With pressfit technology connectors it is no longer necessary to wash or clean the PCB.

Features

  • no soldering, no exposure to high and low temperatures usually associated with conventional soldering or wave solder applications

  • gaslight, long-term reliability, shock resistant connection
  • flexible pressfit zone, adapts easily to hole size

  • gold plated wire wraps posts are suitable for feedthrough connector bridge applications

In todays' technology, high reliability associated with manufacturing and assembly cost are in the foreground. The ideal solution for these requirements are met with pressfit interconnection devices from CONEC. CONEC pressfit connectors are environmentally friendly, no hand soldering or wave soldering is needed, eliminating the cleaning or washing process associated with conventional connectors. In addition the connectors are no longer exposed to very high temperatures during the soldering process. CONEC pressfit connectors are ideally suited for SMD and multilayer PCB designs. The connectors can be repaired or replaced if necessary, without damage to the PCB. Simple operate tools, hand and pneumatic insertion presses are available. This allows for fast and clean installation of the connectors.

CONEC pressfit technology assures:

- gastight connections

- vibration proof connections

- longterm reliability and durability

The elasticity in the pressfit zone provides a relaible connection. Due to the unique design of the pressfit contact no degridation over time is evident. The insertion zone is designed to allow installation of the contacts without any damage to the different layers in the PCB.

The pressfit contacts, due to their design allow for larger tolerances in the plated through holes. Furthermore the pressfit zone is designed to allow installation into the PCB with minimal pushin forces (refer to the chart below).

The shape of the pressfit zone is designed with a smooth lead in section to allow the contact to be pressed into the PCB without damage to the PCB.

Inside the plated through hole the contact aligns itslef in accordance with th hole diameter. In accordance to DIN 41611 standard the hole diameter should be 0.94mm to 1,09mm maximum.

The elasticity built into the design of the contact pressfit zone is stable and provides a long term reliable connection.

Any potential relaxation of the PCB material does not affect stability, contact integrity, long-term reliability or durability.

CONEC PCB connectors (also known as Euro connectors) are made in accordance with the DIN 41612 standards, and are available with a variety of termination styles. Two basic types with straight contact tails in 4mm and 6mm lengths are available. In addition, two types of wirewrap variations are made. The wirewrap configuration is also available with gold plated posts that are used in feed through PCB applications. The gold plated post can therefore be used as a male connector when used with a connector bridge (see page 10).

CONEC added value service

Upon request, CONEC can provide the following:

  • population of PCB's with pressfit connectors

  • complete test of contact integrity after connector installation

The added value services provide the user with a fully tested populated PCB. The end user can therefore eliminate the cost for assembly and test fictures.

Stability and durability tests are in accordance with specification, IEC 352-5 issue 2
